Professor Manuel Sérgio : Work and Thought
Professor Manuel Sérgio promoted a real epistemological revolution in the teaching and knowledge of Physical Education by reflecting on the concept of human kinetics. This seminar will not only evoke and highlight his work and thought, but also pay a deserved tribute to this philosopher and teacher of Portuguese culture, whose legacy extends beyond our borders.
The International Seminar Professor Manuel Sérgio: Obra e Pensamento (CIPMS) will in be held in the next 20 and 21 March 2017, in the Assembly of the Republic (Senate’s Room) and in the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (Auditorium 2).
This initiative aims to analyse and emphasize the pedagogic, philosophic and civic legacy of Professor Manuel Sérgio, and to contribute for a holistic view regarding his work, while also paying an earned tribute to this figure of contemporary Portuguese culture.
This seminar is enriched by the contributes of Catarina Barosa, José Barata-Moura, Daniel Tércio, Guilherme d’Oliveira Martins, Gustavo Pires, João Batista Freire, José Carlos Vasconcelos, José Eduardo Franco, Luís Machado de Abreu, Miguel Real, Viriato Soromenho-Marques, amongst other personalities. The meeting is structured in plenary sessions under the themes “Sport and Corporeality”, “Humanism and Transcendence”, “Epistemological Rupture”, “Body and Culture”, “History and Perspectives on Corporeality”.
We make a special mention to the sessions “Testimonies and Life Experiences” regarding the life and work of Professor Manuel Sérgio, that collects testimonies of individualities associated with culture and sports in Portugal, such as Aurélio Pereira, Emídio Guerra, Francisco Louçã, Jorge Jesus, Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa, José Neto, Laurentino Dias, Luís Filipe Vieira, Odete Santos, Rui Vitória or Vítor Serpa. The closing session will be enriched by the presence of the distinguished President of Cape Verde, personal friend of Manuel Sérgio, who will pronounce the Seminar's closing speech.
The International Seminar Professor Manuel Sérgio: Obra e Pensamento (ISPMS) is an initiative of the Infant Dom Henrique FCT Guest Chair for Insular Atlantic Studies and Globalization (CIDH – UAb/CLEPUL-FLUL), of the Portuguese Institute for Sport and Youth (IPDJ), of the Centre for Portuguese and European Cultures and Literatures of the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon
(CLEPUL-FLUL) and of the European Institute of Cultural Sciences Padre Manuel Antunes (IECCPMA), in cooperation with Lisbon’s City Council (CML), the Faculty of Human Kinetics (FMH-UL), Sporting Clube de Portugal (SCP), Clube de Futebol Os Belenenses (CFB), and other institutions.
